Ayam Cemani

Member of Ayam Cemani Breeder Association

Ayam Cemani is an uncommon and relatively recent breed of chicken originating from Indonesia, related to the Indian Kadaknath. They carry a dominant gene responsible for hyperpigmentation (fibromelanosis), resulting in fully black chickens, including feathers, beak, and internal organs.

This breed is known for its gentle temperament and docility. The hens are highly broody, and when one hen becomes broody, it is common for several others to assist in incubating and caring for the chicks. This behavior facilitates the successful incubation and rearing of chicks, making it easier to establish a second generation from your eggs.

Please Note: Due to the inherent nature of fibromelanosis, we cannot guarantee that all chicks will hatch with a fully black appearance. Some chicks may initially display a toenail or toe tip that appears white or clear, which typically darkens or grows out with age. Others may hatch as entirely beautiful black chicks. As the birds mature, some may develop mulberry coloration or minor feather leakage following a molt. Complete elimination of feather leakage is not feasible with this genetic trait, regardless of breeder diligence. Such variations are common among breeders working to improve this breed, and we continuously strive to enhance our breeding stock. We encourage you to develop your own breeding lines and implement a culling program to help these birds reach their full potential. Occasionally, some individuals may develop a small feather sprout on their shanks as well.

Thank you for your understanding and dedication to breeding quality Ayam Cemani chickens.
